Electric cars in winter: How much range do they lose in 2026?

An electric car does use more energy in winter. On average, range loss can vary from 20% to 40% depending on temperature, speed, heating and on-board equipment. However, a heat pump, pre-conditioning on equipped models, scheduled charging and good habits can significantly limit the impact of cold weather.

Many drivers worry that cold weather can affect electric vehicle performance. Whilst lower temperatures and heating use can have an impact on range, modern electric vehicles are well equipped for winter driving. Discover Peugeot advice for preparing to drive electric in winter.

How much range does an electric car lose in winter?

It is often estimated that, at an outside temperature of 5°C, WLTP range can decrease by 15% to 25%. In very cold conditions below -10°C, and without a heat pump, this reduction can increase to between 35% and 50%. The impact on range depends on four key factors: temperature, speed, heating use and battery management. As a result, two cars with the same WLTP range may not achieve the same range on a winter motorway journey. Take the Peugeot E-3008 Long Range, for example. Offering up to 435 miles (combined WLTP)*, its range in winter conditions can vary depending on the temperature and how the vehicle is used.

This table shows that temperature can have a significant impact on energy consumption. However, these figures are for guidance only and do not guarantee the effect on every journey. For example, a well-equipped vehicle that has been pre-heated and has its battery at an optimal temperature is likely to perform better than a vehicle starting a motorway journey from cold. It also highlights the benefits of a heat pump, where fitted, for drivers who regularly travel in colder conditions.

Why does cold weather reduce the range of electric cars?

In cold weather, an electric car must warm both itself and the passenger compartment, which increases battery consumption.

1. Batteries prefer moderate temperatures

A lithium-ion battery performs best at moderate temperatures. In cold weather, its chemistry slows down and internal resistance increases, which can affect performance. However, this effect is temporary. As the battery returns to its ideal opera...ting temperature of between 20°C and 40°C, performance improves. For example, an electric vehicle parked outside overnight at -5°C will not perform in the same way as one parked indoors, connected to a charger and pre-heated before departure. A cold battery is also less effective at recovering energy during braking, which can lead to higher energy consumption compared with the same journey in milder conditions.

2. Heating uses energy

In a petrol or diesel vehicle, some engine heat is recovered to warm the passenger compartment. As electric motors are more efficient and produce very little heat, battery energy is used for cabin heating instead. Depending on the outside temperature..., cabin size, heating system and selected temperature, this can increase energy consumption by several kilowatt-hours. A heat pump can make a significant difference by reducing the energy needed to heat the passenger compartment. Heating consumption is highest at the beginning of a journey, when the passenger compartment needs to warm up quickly. Once the desired temperature is reached, maintaining it requires much less energy. In winter, pre-conditioning the passenger compartment whilst the vehicle is connected to a charger can help improve efficiency. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel, where fitted, can also help by warming occupants directly, using less energy than heating the entire cabin.

3. Tyres and friction

In winter, cold tyres create more rolling resistance, which can increase energy consumption. Tyre pressure also drops as temperatures fall, typically by around 0.1 bar for every 10°C decrease. That's why it's important to check all four tyres regular...ly, both for safety and to help maximise range. Applying the manufacturer's recommended maximum tyre pressure can also help improve efficiency on longer journeys. When it's time to replace your tyres, look for the A-to-E energy label and choose an A-rated tyre if you're looking to maximise range.

4. Cold-air density

On the motorway, more energy is needed to travel through colder, denser air. The effect is limited at 31 mph but becomes more noticeable at 80 mph. As a result, range can be more affected on longer winter motorway journeys, whilst driving in towns an...d on secondary roads allows for greater energy recovery through braking, helping to reduce the effect.

Heat pumps: what is their real impact?

A heat pump uses less energy than conventional electric heating to warm the passenger compartment. Rather than generating all its heat electrically, it recovers heat from the outside air, electrical components and the vehicle's cooling system, helping to improve efficiency.
In practice, the benefits are most noticeable in cold weather, where a heat pump can help reduce the energy needed to heat the passenger compartment. This can lower electricity consumption and help maximise range. On winter journeys, the benefits can be even greater when combined with passenger-compartment pre-heating and efficient driving. For the Peugeot E-3008, a heat pump is recommended for drivers who regularly experience temperatures below 10°C. For the Peugeot E-3008, the heat pump is standard on GT Premium Electric versions. How does battery pre-conditioning work?

In winter, pre-conditioning helps prepare the battery to accept higher and more stable charging power. This can help avoid arriving at a rapid charger with a battery that is too cold. With a pre-conditioned battery, charging from 20% to 80% typically takes around 27 to 30 minutes, compared with 45 to 60 minutes without pre-conditioning. To keep charging stops as short as possible, it is generally best to charge up to 80%. Charging from 80% to 100% can take as long as, or even longer than, charging from 20% to 80%. For longer journeys, aiming to keep the battery between 20% and 80% can help optimise travel time.
On Peugeot E-3008 and E-5008 vehicles produced from October 2025, standard battery pre-conditioning can be activated manually or automatically through the navigation system's route planning. For earlier vehicles, a free update may be available through your Peugeot retailer. In cold weather, battery pre-conditioning helps improve charging performance, allowing the battery to recover energy more quickly during charging stops.

How can you maximise the range of your electric vehicle in winter?

Here are five simple tips to help reduce the impact of cold weather on range:

1. Park under cover

A closed garage, covered car park or any location that is less exposed to the elements can help reduce cooling of the battery and passenger compartment. This means less energy is needed to bring the vehicle to a comfortable temperature.

2. Pre-heat the car whilst it is connected

Heating or cooling the passenger compartment uses energy. Pre-conditioning your vehicle whilst it's still connected to a charger means the energy needed to reach a comfortable temperature comes from the electricity supply, rather than the battery, he...lping to preserve range.

3. Use heated seats and the heated steering wheel

Heated seats and a heated steering wheel warm occupants directly, using less energy than heating the entire passenger compartment. They are particularly useful on shorter journeys, helping to improve comfort whilst reducing energy consumption.
...

4. Check your tyre pressure regularly

As temperatures fall, tyre pressure decreases, increasing rolling resistance and energy consumption. Regularly checking and adjusting your tyre pressures can help maximise range, while also helping to keep you safe on the road.

5. Activate Eco mode

Eco mode can be particularly effective on longer journeys. Driving at a slightly lower speed helps reduce energy consumption, especially in cold, dense air. Eco mode can also help limit energy used for heating.

Does cold weather damage an electric vehicle battery?

Cold weather can temporarily affect range and charging speed, but it does not damage an electric vehicle's battery or affect its long-term health. As temperatures rise, performance returns to normal. Modern electric vehicles use thermal management systems to help protect the battery in all weather conditions, whilst Peugeot electric vehicles benefit from PEUGEOT CARE^, providing up to 8 years or 100,000 miles of coverage. Winter driving also brings several benefits, including instant starting, remote pre-heating and defrosting, precise traction control and the ability to warm the passenger compartment before setting off.

What the UK teaches us about electric vehicles in winter

Winter in the UK can bring colder temperatures, frosty mornings and longer journeys over the festive period. While electric vehicle range can be affected by colder weather, features such as battery pre-conditioning and route planning can help drivers get the most from their vehicle. As more UK drivers make the switch to electric, winter driving has become a normal part of EV ownership, with many finding that the right preparation helps them travel confidently throughout the season.

In winter, range may decrease, but comfort doesn't have to

Winter conditions can increase energy consumption, with range typically reduced by 20% to 50% depending on temperatures and driving conditions. However, there are simple ways to help minimise the impact. A heat pump can reduce the energy used for heating, battery pre-conditioning can improve rapid charging performance, and pre-heating the passenger compartment whilst the vehicle is connected helps preserve range before you set off. These features can help make winter driving more efficient and convenient. Peugeot electric vehicles can also be pre-heated and defrosted before your journey, helping you start the day in comfort. With up to 435 miles (combined WLTP)* of range, the Peugeot E-3008 Long Range offers added peace of mind when temperatures drop.
