Sustainability

DESIGN

INNOVATION AND CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES

From the design phase through to the end-of-life of the vehicles, PEUGEOT strives to limit their impact on the environment. In addition to respecting environmental standards, PEUGEOT aims to lead the way in sustainable mobility and therefore devotes substantial means towards reducing the ecological footprint of its vehicles.

TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS

PEUGEOT continues to work on the optimisation of petrol and diesel thermal powertrains (including the deployment of Stop & Start mechanisms).

Through Hybrid4 technology we enable the association of internal combustion engines and electric propulsion.

The PEUGEOT e-208 and PEUGEOT e-2008 are 100% electric and offer responsible urban mobility.

GREEN MATERIALS

Groupe Stellantis is aiming for leadership in this field, with 30% of green materials per vehicle on average (recycled metals, green materials polymers etc.). It goes without saying that these new materials are selected in compliance with quality and safety requirements.

Groupe Stellantis pays a particular attention to the use of green materials in the polymers. These are recycled plastics, natural fibres or bio sourced materials (polymers obtained from renewable resources). Their use allows us to cut down on plastics of fossil origin while diversifying the activities of the plastic recycling channels.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DESIGN

DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY

In relation to product development, PEUGEOT's recycling strategy is based on two key aspects:

-Design for Sustainability.

-Development and implementation of material cycles for vehicle production.

INTEGRATED PRODUCT LIABILITY

Development:

  • Life Cycle Assessments
  • Sustainable material selection

Production:

  • Use of recycled materials (recyclates)

Use:

  • Disposal through concessions (waste management)
  • Spare parts

Valuation:

  • Vehicle valuation
  • Remediation and pre-treatment
  • European ELV Directive

To ensure that all PEUGEOT products meet our recycling objectives, all PEUGEOT design teams must follow the recyclability/valuation guidelines. This process also allows engineers to assess the simplicity with which parts, components, etc. can be recycled at the end of a vehicle’s life.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DESIGN

  • Sustainable material selection
  • Depollution
  • Pretreatment

For some time now, PEUGEOT has been using recycled materials, also known as recycled products, and is doing so even more now. We continue our efforts to meet our commitment to build vehicles using 30% recycled or biomaterials. Technically, we have made significant efforts to use more recycled materials.

Recycled products must meet the same technical requirements as virgin products. Recycled materials are preferable as long as they do not increase the price of the piece. Quality is never compromised. Our recycling team makes every effort to maintain high quality mechanical and thermal aesthetics and durability, and also to guarantee performance standards.

In fact, our high-quality recycled materials are now used for even visible as well as hidden parts of PEUGEOT vehicles.

MANUFACTURING

ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION

Today all our production plants have obtained the ISO 14001 certification. This standard (created in 1996) requires that plants put in place means of surveillance, control and measurement of the effects of the processes on the environment. Application of the certification commits all the staff to a continuous improvement approach thanks to appropriate training on environmental protection.

REPAIR MANAGEMENT OF THE WASTE PRODUCED

The PEUGEOT network is committed to four major criteria of environmental management:

  • Using approved organisations to sort and collect vehicle waste from the maintenance and repair activities of our network of garages.
  • Network compliance with national and European regulations.
  • Total traceability of vehicle waste until it is recycled.
  • Sorting and collecting waste from maintenance and repair activities is organised according to the brand’s end-of-life product management methods.

STANDARD EXCHANGE: A HIGH-QUALITY SOLUTION

Do you need to change a part on your PEUGEOT vehicle? Help to reduce its environmental impact by choosing a Standard Exchange part. These are refurbished parts from an extremely rigorous renovation process with used parts from PEUGEOT vehicles. Their manufacturer’s warranty is identical to the warranty for new parts.

AN ECONOMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL SOLUTION

Extend the life of your PEUGEOT by keeping it in perfect working order for a limited cost adapted to your vehicle’s age. Join our commitment to environmental protection, recycling and reducing vehicle waste.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OF END-OF-LIFE PRODUCTS RECYCLING OF END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES

Several years ago, PEUGEOT set up a partnership with approved dismantling companies to collect and treat end-of-life motor vehicles of all makes in the best environmental conditions. The objective: achieving a 95% recovery rate, with at least 85% reuse of parts and recycling of materials.

RETURNING YOUR END-OF-LIFE PEUGEOT VEHICLE

Delivery

The last owner takes the end-of-life vehicle to one of our collection partners. After checking over the vehicle, our partner issues the necessary Certificate of Destruction (CoD).

Pre-treatment and Depollution

First of all, the battery is removed and the airbags are neutralised. Our take-back partner then removes all the fuels and other liquids from the end-of-life vehicles. This includes the engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, liquid coolant, and the cooling liquid used in the air conditioning system.

Dismantling

The next step is to dismantle the components and systems to sell them as used parts or to use them as a basis for remanufactured parts. If economically viable, materials such as the plastic and glass are removed to be recycled.

Storage space

The materials representing a danger to the environment are collected and then sent to specialist recovery companies to be recycled or eliminated.

Shredder

The pre-treated hulks are delivered to a shredder which separates the end-of-life vehicles into small parts and sorts them into different fractions for recycling or recovery.

Post-Shredder Technology (PST)

These automotive shredder fractions are then treated using different technologies (magnetic, Eddy currents, flotation) to obtain material fractions that can be used as secondary raw materials.

Recycling/Recovery/Landfill

The material fractions produced by the shredder and from the PST can be recycled (for example to replace coal in blast furnaces or for drying sewage sludge) or recovered by the cement industry. This process makes it possible to recover 95% of the vehicle and considerably reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.

RETURNS NETWORK – RECYCLE YOUR PEUGEOT

We have always done our best to respect the environment, but today, recycling is no longer a choice: it is a legal obligation laid down in national regulations for end-of-life vehicles. This recycling approach requires manufacturers to reduce the amount of waste generated by vehicle production and at the end of their life cycle.

Contact a PEUGEOT network representative to return your end-of-life vehicle. This free service is subject to certain conditions (see below).

We want to make sure that your end-of-life vehicle is recycled in an environmentally friendly way. We ensure that all our returns sites comply with the legal requirements of the end-of-life vehicle regulations. All our vehicle returns partners, all processes and the documentation of all incoming and outgoing material flows are also checked by our recycling experts.

The free return of your PEUGEOT when no longer in use applies only in the following cases:

  • None of the essential components or parts are missing
  • It contains no non-automotive waste
  • It has up to 9 seats or is a light commercial vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes.
  • The vehicle was last registered in the EU.
  • The original vehicle documents are delivered with the vehicle.

Return your end-of-life vehicle to our returns partner who will give you a certificate of destruction and the necessary documents to cancel its registration. Leave with the certainty that your old car will be destroyed with the utmost respect for the environment.
