See you in 2016..

After 14 days, 13 stages and 9112 kilometres (4601 of which were run competitively), Team Peugeot Total reached the finish of its first Dakar with two of its three Peugeot 2008 DKR entries. Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret finished 11th while Cyril Despres and Gilles Picard were 34th. Both crews faced up to all the challenges that Dakar could offer, providing the entire team with valuable experience that will enable it to come back stronger in 2016.

Final push for Peugeot underway in Argentina

The Dakar Rally is now back in Argentina en route to the finish at Buenos Aires, just three days away. On a tricky special stage that started at 3,600 metres above sea level, Stéphane Peterhansel was back setting top-10 stage times: the Frenchman was ninth overall, with a faultless display through the stage despite an unfavourable starting position. Cyril Despres sets the 22nd-fastest time and is making up places in the overall classification.

The second half of the marathon stage – a long stage complete with an overnight halt in Bolivia, during which competitors are not allowed outside assistance – brought the crews back to the bivouac in Iquique, Chile, with a dramatic climax as the cars descended the mountainous sand dune overlooking the service park.

Stormy entry into Bolivia

On day seven car competitors drove into Bolivia for the first time in Dakar history. The opening leg of this marathon stage, a concept last seen on the Dakar in 2009, took the crews up to an altitude of more than 3,500 metres above sea level before plunging them into muddy valleys. Weather conditions were particularly extreme, providing some of the most challenging terrain seen so far on the event.

With only a tenth of the race gone – at the end of day three of 13 – the brand-new Peugeot 2008 DKR has continued to make progress on the Dakar Rally in the hands of the event’s most successful-ever driver line-up. Team Peugeot Total overcomes the longest Dakar stage

The second day of the Dakar Rally, taking the crews from Villa Carlos Paz to San Juan in Argentina, contained the longest special stage of the rally at 518 kilometres. Not only was the stage long but also very varied, starting off with some tight and twisty sections, followed by dust and sand. The biggest difficulty though was the extreme heat, which caused all the competing crews to suffer. The legendary Dakar is already living up to its fearsome reputation.

After the opening day of the Dakar Rally yesterday – and the first day of Dakar competition for Team Peugeot Total since 1990 – all three examples of the Peugeot 2008 DKR returned safely to the overnight bivouac in Villa Carlos Paz, having successfully negotiated the opening 175-kilometre stage, followed by the longest individual road section (519 kilometres) of the entire 17-day event.
