New Peugeot 208 gets 5-star Euro NCAP rating

The new Peugeot 208 has become the first car in its class to receive the full 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

208 awarded 5 star euro ncap rating

The European New Car Assessment Programme tests the safety of new cars, with a star approval system denoting the overall rating in four areas: adult protection, children protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

The 208 scored highly across these areas. As a result, it was awarded the new NCAP 5-star rating, which is harder to achieve now than ever before, thanks to tough new testing criteria.

When Peugeot started 'Project 208', designers knew the model had to represent the regeneration of the rulebook for the brand. The car features state of the art technology and design features to help maximise its safety, and fuel efficiency. The 208 is also smaller on the outside and bigger inside than its predecessors. It weights 110kg less than the 207, helping to reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel consumption. The lighter weight makes the 208 safer too: as every kilogramme lost reduces the amount of energy to displace.

The NCAP assessment has been bolstered with higher testing standards this year – but the new 208 has risen to the challenge. Even the 208 Access entry-level model is equipped with the latest technology and equipment: ABS, ESP, six airbags, rear Isofix child seat fixings, speed limiter, front seat belt warning, collapsible steering column and more.

The revised car structure also offers extra protection: with an aluminium absorption beam, and very high strength steel and ultra-high strength steel panels.

A Peugeot spokesperson said: "This Euro NCAP result is best proof of the 208’s level of safety protection, both in active and passive conditions. In addition, arranged around elements which play an important role in this area, the re-styled architecture of the driving position makes it safer for driving."

The 208 features a smaller steering wheel for increased agility, which also gives the driver a new and improved dynamic driving experience, whilst the dashboard is optimised for safety and comfort: with eye-level information on the raised instrument panel positioned closer to the driver to minimise distractions from the road.

The new Peugeot 208 is launched in the UK this summer.
