Waste Battery Directive

Waste Battery Directive

The European Directive to address the treatment and disposal of waste batteries was published to the EC Member States in September 2006. This Directive gave instructions to each Member State to implement National Regulations regarding the collection and treatment of waste batteries.

To this end, the Government introduced the “Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulation 2009”, which came into force on the 5th May 2009. This Regulation implements the Waste Battery Directive 2006/66/EC and lays down the rules for the reporting of batteries placed on the market and the collection and treatment of waste batteries, including portable battery compliance schemes and free take back by the vehicle manufacturer of automotive and portable batteries in certain conditions.

Battery Registration number for Peugeot Motor Company PLC is: BPRN00543

Type of Batteries:
There are three main types of batteries considered by this legislation:

  • Automotive batteries which means vehicle starter batteries,
  • Industrial batteries which are currently not produced by this company, and
  • Portable batteries means a sealed battery that can easily be carried and is neither an automotive nor an industrial battery (eg remote central locking key batteries)

Automotive Battery Collection:
the producer must collect automotive batteries from the final holder when requested.  The "Final holder" is defined as a person, who in the ordinary course of trade, occupation or profession, removes automotive batteries from vehicles.  Free collection does not extend to private customers who can dispose of automotive batteries at local amenities sites or at your local CarTakeBack ATFs

Portable Battery Take Back: From May 2010 distributors are required to offer free take back if they place more than 32kg of batteries on the market in a year

To fulfil its obligations under the terms of these regulations, Peugeot Motor Company PLC, has contracted with CarTakeBack.com (CTB), to guarantee that qualifying automotive batteries will be taken back from the last owner or keeper at no cost.  Peugeot Motor Company PLC, has also signed up to the Budget Pack battery compliance scheme to ensure that recycling targets of portable batteries are met.
