308 - king of the fuel misers!

It's official! Peugeot's 308 has grabbed the crown in the 2007 MPG Marathon as the most economical family-size car out there.

With an overall return of 71.92mpg, the 308 romped home in a real-world test where rival models slugged it out over 330 miles of city and rural roads.

Peugeot's contender in the AA/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon notched an improvement of 20 per cent over the maker's own figures - proving we can make huge savings if we think ahead and have clever technology at hand.

How clever? In accordance with the rules, the 308 1.6-litre HDi 110hp SE used in the 'race' had no special preparation, being fitted with the same Michelin Energy Saver tyres included as standard for all HDi 90 and HDi 110 options.

Economy driving experts John Dalton and David Adams were at the wheel, steering the 308 to triumph over Audi's A3 2.0 TDi, Kia's cee'd 1.6D and Seat's Leon FR TDI.

John said: "This car shows you don't need to compromise on size or practicality when looking to reduce your environmental impact."

Peugeot's 308 HDi range has CO2 emissions from just 120g/km, and this model's published fuel economy is up to 62.77mpg on the official combined cycle - but the MPG Marathon result shows it's possible to achieve even more than that.

"Once you become accustomed to driving with the environment and your fuel gauge in mind, economy driving is quite natural," John adds. "You can experience the benefits in decreased fuel costs, enjoy a similar rate of progress and reduce your environmental impact too. It's a win-win situation!"

IT’S A FACT!
During a 308's lifespan, Michelin Energy Saver tyres are calculated to provide a CO2 reduction (via fuel savings) of around one tonne of CO2!
