Final countdown to Le Mans

The countdown is on for this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour race – the epic event that’s a true test of man and machine.

The race takes place this weekend, 13-14 June, and will see three Peugeot 908 HDi FAP sports prototypes entered under the Peugeot Sport banner.

The cars go up against 52 others to compete for this much-coveted title, which only just eluded Peugeot Sport last year, when they finished in second, third and fifth places.

Leading the Peugeot charge in 2009 will be the No7 Team Peugeot Total car, crewed by Pedro Lamy, Christian Klien and Nicolas Minassian – all experienced Le Mans drivers. The team’s victory chances were boosted recently when they won the 1,000km LMS race at Spa, and they’ll be looking to return to the top of the podium this weekend.

The Le Mans 24 Hour race is the most celebrated of the world’s endurance races. Now in its 86th year, it attracts more than 200,000 spectators from around the world. It’s a true test of stamina, endurance and car performance. Drivers compete in teams of three, racing in stints of between one and three hours, grabbing short naps when they can and sustaining themselves on a carefully controlled diet.

Victory at Le Mans has been the aim of Peugeot Sport since it unveiled its 908 HDi FAP sports car in 2007. Having come close to reaching its goal last year, the team are determined to secure victory in 2009. Move over Audi – Peugeot want the title!
